Mitigating effects of a multicomponent mycotoxin detoxifying agent against combined dietary exposure to multiple mycotoxins in pigs

  OBJETIVE  

Mycotoxins are toxic fungal metabolites found in feed that can cause significant adverse health effects in pigs.

Additionally, simultaneous dietary exposure to multiple mycotoxins is prevalent in pigs (Akinmoladun et al., 2025).

This study evaluated the in vivo efficacy of a multicomponent mycotoxin detoxifying agent (MMDA), combining minerals, a microbial blend, yeast cell wall components, and herbal extracts, in mitigating the effects of combined dietary exposure to multiple mycotoxins in pigs.

  MATERIALS & METHODS  

Five in vivo trials were conducted in pigs exposed to multiple dietary mycotoxins.

The diets were supplemented with the MMDA at 1.5 or 3 kg/t of feed.

The mycotoxin challenges in each trial were as follows:

  • ⇒Trial 1: 1.2–1.5 mg of deoxynivalenol (DON) and 0.9 mg of zearalenone (ZEN) per kg of feed in piglets..
  • ⇒Trial 2: 0.5 mg of T-2 toxin and 0.35 mg of ZEN per kg of feed in piglets.
  • ⇒Trial 3: 2 mg of T-2 toxin and 1 mg of ZEN per kg of feed in sows.
  • ⇒Trial 4: 0.5 mg of ochratoxin A (OTA) and 1 mg of ZEN per kg of feed in piglets.
  • ⇒Trial 5: 0.5 mg of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), 0.5 mg of fumonisin B1 (FB1), and 0.35 mg of ZEN per kg of feed in piglets.

Health and performance parameters, mycotoxin residues in tissues, and blood biochemistry and hematology parameters were evaluated.

  RESULTS  

Significant improvements in growth performance (p < 0.05) were observed in the groups receiving 3 kg of MMDA per ton of feed. These included

These included:

  • 9.5% improvement in feed conversion ratio in Trial 1.
  • 14.3% increase in body weight gain in Trial 5.

 

Significant reductions in tissue mycotoxin residues were also observed in piglets receiving 3 kg of MMDA per ton of feed, including:

  • 53.3% reduction in kidney T-2 toxin residues in Trial 2.
  • 26.8% reduction in ZEN and its metabolites in liver samples in Trial 4.

These findings indicate that the MMDA significantly reduces the bioavailability and adverse effects of mycotoxins in pigs and can serve as an effective tool for mitigating the effects of combined mycotoxin exposure in pig production.
